It Takes Two Hands to Make a Home
Noee Zahavy
The project is a research-based exploration of the complexities and subjectivity of memories, focusing on concepts such as home, house, nationality, and belonging without seeking definitive answers. Utilizing public, national, and familial archives, Noee investigates the interplay between personal and social memory, challenging the notion of archives as reliable sources due to their gaps and lack of representation. To illustrate this distortion, Noee re-created a ceramic glaze called ‘Fat lava,’ originating in 1960s West Germany and characterized by a thick, bubbly texture. Applied to dark ceramic tiles, the glaze’s significant colour contrast and bold texture distort projected images. This challenges traditional imagery viewing, prompting a reevaluation of memory. The films projected onto the tiles combine archival materials and personal footage, connecting Noee as a woman with various histories. The videos highlight women’s labour in various settings — domestic spaces, fields, and factories. This focus emphasizes often forgotten stories and representations of women’s labour in our common history.
